The UAE corporate tax return is due nine months after the end of your financial year. If your year end is 31 December, you file by 30 September. If it is 31 March, you file by 31 December. There is no single national filing date, and that is precisely why companies miss it — they wait for a deadline that was never going to be announced.
UAE corporate tax registration came first
Registration and filing are two separate obligations with two separate deadlines, and conflating them is the most common mistake we see.
Registration deadlines were tied to the month your trade licence was originally issued, not to your financial year. Companies that assumed they could register when they filed their first return found they had already been late for months.
The penalty for late registration is AED 10,000. It applies whether or not you owe a single dirham of tax. A free zone company confidently expecting a 0% rate is still liable for it if it registered late.
If you are not certain whether you registered, check rather than assume. It takes five minutes on EmaraTax and it is the single cheapest piece of due diligence available to you.
Working out your own date
Take the last day of your financial year and add nine months. That is your filing deadline and your payment deadline — they are the same date.
| Financial year end | Return and payment due |
|---|---|
| 31 December 2025 | 30 September 2026 |
| 31 March 2026 | 31 December 2026 |
| 30 June 2026 | 31 March 2027 |
| 30 September 2026 | 30 June 2027 |
Note what this means practically: the nine months is not preparation time. It is the outer limit. If your books are not closed until month seven, you have two months to prepare a computation, make elections that cannot be reversed, and pay. That is not comfortable.
Nil returns are still returns
Three groups regularly assume they are outside the system and are not.
Companies with no profit. A loss-making year still requires a return. Filing it also carries the loss forward properly, which is worth doing for its own sake.
Companies claiming Small Business Relief. The relief removes the tax, not the filing. You elect for it on the return — which means you must file the return to claim it. We covered the mechanics in the Small Business Relief guide.
Free zone companies expecting 0%. Qualifying Free Zone Person status is claimed and evidenced on a return like anything else. It is not a status you hold quietly. See the conditions in full.
What late actually costs
The headline figures are worth knowing before you decide something can slip.
- Late registration — AED 10,000
- Late filing — a fixed monthly penalty that escalates the longer the return is outstanding
- Late payment — a monthly percentage on the unpaid tax, which compounds
- Incorrect return — a percentage of the tax difference, reduced substantially if you disclose it voluntarily rather than being found
- Failure to keep records — a separate penalty, assessed independently of the above
The pattern mirrors VAT: proactive correction is materially cheaper than being assessed. Where there are grounds, penalty waiver applications do succeed — but they succeed far more often when the company approached the FTA rather than the other way round.
A compliance calendar that is not just corporate tax
Corporate tax is one date among several, and the others tend to be the ones that catch people out because they carry no invoice to remind you.
- VAT returns — monthly or quarterly, 28 days after the period ends
- Corporate tax — nine months after year end
- ESR notification and report — six and twelve months after year end where the regime applies
- UBO register — maintained continuously, updated within 15 days of any change
- Trade licence renewal — annual, on the licence anniversary
- Audited accounts — before renewal, in the zones that require them
Six recurring obligations on four different cycles. Nobody holds that in their head reliably, which is why every client we take on gets a written calendar in the first fortnight. We wrote up the two most-missed ones in the ESR and UBO guide.
If you are already behind
Do not let the deadline pass quietly while you work out what to do. The position gets worse on a monthly cycle, and the difference between disclosing and being found is measured in percentages of the tax, not fixed fees.
The sequence that works is unglamorous. Close the books properly, even if that means reconstructing a backlog first. Prepare the computation on real numbers rather than estimates. File. Pay what is due. Then apply for waiver of what can be waived, with the supporting narrative attached.
Companies that follow that order almost always end up better off than companies that wait for certainty before acting.

Frequently asked questions
Nine months after the end of your financial year. A company with a 31 December year end files by 30 September the following year. A company with a 31 March year end files by 31 December. There is no single national deadline — it follows your own year end.
AED 10,000. It applies for failing to register within the deadline tied to your licence issue date, and it applies whether or not you owe any tax.
Yes. Every taxable person files a return, including companies with nil taxable income, companies claiming Small Business Relief and free zone companies claiming the 0% rate. Filing and paying are separate obligations.
It is possible but it is not a planning trick. Changing the tax period requires meeting FTA conditions and applying properly, and doing it to dodge a deadline you have already missed does not help.
Seven years from the end of the tax period. That covers the ledgers, the computation, the elections you made and the evidence behind them.
