Umm Al Quwain free zone company setup

The Umm Al Quwain free zone is a quiet, no-frills, genuinely cheap UAE licence. Good value if your clients are overseas and your banking is already sorted.

Lowest-cost groupSimple processSmall units available

Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone — UAQ FTZ — is one of the UAE’s quietest and cheapest zones. It is a straightforward, no-frills licence: low cost, few requirements, and a small emirate that most clients will never think about. That is either exactly what you want or exactly the problem.

Why businesses choose UAQ Free Zone

  • Low licence cost, competitive with Ajman and the Sharjah zones
  • Simple, quick process with modest documentation requirements
  • Broad activity list covering trading, services, consultancy, micro-industrial and e-commerce
  • Multi-activity licences without forcing a second entity
  • Small industrial and warehouse units at costs Dubai cannot approach

Who UAQ suits

Cost-sensitive consultants and traders whose clients are overseas, small e-commerce operations, and light industrial or storage businesses that need a modest unit rather than a Dubai warehouse. It suits founders who already have UAE banking, or who genuinely do not need a UAE account.

The candid version: UAQ competes on price, not on prestige or banking access. If you are choosing it, choose it for the cost and go in with your eyes open about the account opening process.

Umm Al Quwain free zone licence cost

  • Licence and registration — among the lowest in the UAE, priced by activity count and visa allocation
  • Flexi-desk to small unit — premises drive the cost once you go beyond a desk
  • Establishment card — roughly AED 1,200 to 2,000
  • Each residence visa — roughly AED 3,500 to 5,500 including medical and Emirates ID

As with every low-cost zone, the advertised licence price is not the operational cost. Budget for the establishment card and at least one visa unless you are certain you do not need UAE banking. Our guide to real UAE setup costs covers the omissions.

Banking from UAQ

This is the honest constraint. UAQ entities face the same scrutiny as other low-cost zones, and some banks are simply reluctant. What moves the needle is a resident signatory with an Emirates ID, a specific rather than generic activity description, named suppliers and customers, evidence of actual trading, and documented source of funds.

If UAE banking is essential to your model and your budget can stretch, a Dubai zone is often the cheaper decision once you account for the time lost to declined applications. We will say so if that is our view. See what banks actually assess.

Corporate tax and audit

A UAQ company is a UAE company. It must register for corporate tax and file a return regardless of the rate that applies. If you intend to claim the 0% rate on qualifying income, you need to satisfy every Qualifying Free Zone Person condition including audited financial statements, and substance is judged on activity in the UAE rather than on the licence.

For many small UAQ companies, small business relief is more relevant in practice than the free zone regime — and it has an end date worth planning around.

Formation process

  1. Activity selection, with the tax position tested first
  2. Name reservation
  3. Application and documents
  4. Licence issuance
  5. Establishment card where visas are needed
  6. Visa guidance
  7. Bank account file preparation and introduction

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest freezone licence in the UAE?

UAQ, Ajman Media City and the Sharjah zones compete for that title and the answer changes with activity count and visa allocation. Compare full first-year cost, not the advertised licence figure.

What is UAQ Free Zone?

Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone, the free zone authority of the emirate of Umm Al Quwain, licensing trading, service, consultancy, e-commerce and small industrial activities at low cost.

Is UAQ the cheapest free zone in the UAE?

It is in the cheapest group, alongside Ajman Media City and the Sharjah zones. Which is genuinely cheapest for you depends on activity count and visa allocation, so compare full first-year cost.

Can a UAQ company open a bank account?

Yes, but expect more scrutiny than from a Dubai zone. A resident signatory and a well-evidenced application file make the difference.

Can a UAQ company trade in the UAE mainland?

Not directly. Mainland sales need a distributor, branch or mainland licence, and that income falls outside qualifying income for the 0% rate.

Does a UAQ company need audited accounts?

If claiming Qualifying Free Zone Person status, yes. The zone may also request them at renewal. We audit UAQ entities from Dubai.

How far is Umm Al Quwain from Dubai?

Roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road. Fine if you rarely need to be there; inconvenient if you do.
