A TRN is your Tax Registration Number — a 15-digit number the Federal Tax Authority issues when you register for a tax. You get it through EmaraTax, it appears on your registration certificate, and you cannot legally charge VAT without one. It is not the same thing as a tax residency certificate, and confusing the two costs people weeks.
What a TRN actually is, and what TRN means
The FTA issues a TRN when it accepts a tax registration. It identifies you to the Authority, it must appear on every tax invoice you issue, and your customers use it to verify that the VAT you are charging them is real.
| Document | What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| TRN | Your tax registration number, issued on registration | Not proof of residence, not a licence |
| TRN certificate | The registration certificate showing the number, downloadable from EmaraTax | Not something you apply for separately |
| Tax Residency Certificate | Proof the UAE treats you as tax resident, used to claim treaty benefits abroad | Nothing to do with your TRN |
| Tax domicile certificate | The older name for the same residency certificate | Not a separate document |
People asking for a “UAE tax certificate” usually mean one of two completely different things. If a foreign tax authority or bank is asking, you almost certainly need the residency certificate. If a UAE customer is asking, they want your TRN.
You may have more than one
Corporate tax and VAT are separate registrations with separate numbers. Being VAT-registered since 2018 does nothing for your corporate tax position, and assuming otherwise is how a great many businesses collected the AED 10,000 late registration penalty.
Each registration also has its own GIBAN for payments. Sending a corporate tax payment to your VAT GIBAN lands it against the wrong account — see how to pay corporate tax.
How to get a TRN number in the UAE
You do not apply for a TRN. You apply for a registration, and the number comes with it.
- Create or access your EmaraTax account. Use a company-controlled email, not a PRO’s. This matters more than it sounds — see the EmaraTax guide.
- Create the taxable person profile with the trade licence, activities and address exactly as they appear on the licence.
- Submit the registration — VAT, corporate tax or excise. Each is separate.
- Upload supporting documents: trade licence, passport and Emirates ID of the owners and authorised signatory, proof of authorisation, bank details, and for VAT, evidence of turnover.
- Respond to queries quickly. Most delays are the FTA waiting on you, not the other way round.
- Download the certificate once approved. The TRN is on it.
When you must register for VAT
Mandatory registration applies once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the previous twelve months, or where you expect to exceed it in the next thirty days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500.
Voluntary registration is genuinely useful for a business with significant input VAT and few sales — a company fitting out premises, say. It is a burden for a business with consumer customers and low costs. Our VAT registration page works through which side you fall on.
TRN verification: checking a supplier’s number
The FTA publishes a TRN verification tool on its website. Enter the number and it confirms whether it is a valid registration and the registered name.
Use it. Two reasons, and the second one is new.
First, a supplier charging you 5% on an invoice without a valid TRN is charging you money the Authority will never see, and you cannot recover it as input tax. The invoice fails the requirements regardless of how it looks.
Second, from 1 October 2026 checking the TRN is no longer sufficient on its own. Under FTA Decision No. 13 of 2026 you must carry out defined supplier and supply verification before deducting input tax — identity, place of business, risk indicators and a documented policy. A valid TRN is now the floor, not the ceiling.
Where the TRN has to appear
- On every tax invoice and tax credit note you issue.
- On simplified tax invoices where those are permitted.
- In your VAT returns and correspondence with the Authority.
- Generally on quotations and contracts where VAT is being charged, so the customer can verify it before paying.
An invoice missing a valid TRN is not a valid tax invoice, which means your customer cannot recover the VAT on it. That is a commercial problem as much as a compliance one — it is the sort of thing that gets a supplier dropped.
The problems we get called about
“We never received the TRN.” Usually the registration is sitting in EmaraTax awaiting a response to a query, and the notification went to an email nobody reads. Log in and look.
“The TRN certificate shows the wrong details.” Update the profile. Outdated licence, activity or address details are a compliance failure in their own right, not just untidiness.
“We have a TRN but stopped trading.” You must deregister where the conditions are met. A dormant registration still carries filing obligations, and missed returns accrue penalties on a company earning nothing.
“A customer says our TRN does not verify.” Check you are quoting the right one — the corporate tax and VAT numbers are different, and people quote the wrong one surprisingly often.
Getting it right first time
Most rejected registrations fail on documents that do not agree: a licence that has been renewed but not updated, an authorised signatory with no evidence of authority, turnover figures that do not match the accounts. None of that is difficult. It just needs someone to check before submission rather than after.
