Accounting firms in Dubai: how to choose one that survives your audit

Accounting firms in Dubai come in four kinds, the independence question nobody explains, and six checks that matter more than the monthly fee.

Four firm typesIndependence explainedSix real checks

Most accounting firms in Dubai will quote you a monthly bookkeeping fee. Fewer will tell you what happens when the year end arrives and those numbers have to survive an audit, a corporate tax return and possibly an FTA query. That gap is where the real cost appears — and it is what separates firms far more than price does.

The four kinds of accounting firms in Dubai

TypeWhat they do wellWhere it breaks down
Bookkeeping-only providersCheap monthly processingNo audit, no tax. Year end becomes someone else’s problem — and yours to coordinate
Accounting + tax firmsBooks and returns joined upCannot audit their own work, so you still appoint an auditor separately
Chartered practices (audit-led)Audit, tax and accounting under one roof, with independence managedUsually more expensive than pure bookkeeping

The independence point nobody explains

Ask any firm you are considering: who prepares the statutory accounts, and can the same firm audit them?

In the UAE the answer is often no, because independence rules prevent auditing work you produced yourself. Which means your bookkeeper hands off to an auditor who then bills you to correct what the bookkeeper did — and neither of them owns the outcome.

This is not an argument for one model over another. It is an argument for asking the question before you engage, so you know who is responsible for what at year end rather than discovering it in March.

We are explicit about which entity does what and where independence requires separation. Among accounting and bookkeeping companies in the UAE that is not universal practice, and it is worth confirming before you sign.

Six questions that actually separate firms

  1. Can they handle your corporate tax position? Since corporate tax, the accounts are the foundation of the return. A bookkeeper who does not understand qualifying income or disallowable expenses leaves you to bridge that yourself.
  2. Will the books survive an audit? Ask what their year-end handover pack contains. If the answer is “the trial balance”, expect an expensive audit — see what a proper close looks like.
  3. Do they carry the gratuity provision? A surprising number of UAE SMEs never book it. It accrues monthly whether recorded or not — see the gratuity calculator.
  4. Is the chart of accounts built for the UAE? Blocked VAT categories, free zone income splits and named related party accounts, or the software default? See why it matters.
  5. Who reviews the work? Not who does it. Ask whether a qualified person reviews before filing.
  6. What happens when you are behind? Everyone falls behind eventually. Ask how they handle backlog recovery before you need it.

What it should cost

Monthly bookkeeping fees in Dubai vary enormously, and the number on its own tells you very little. What determines value is transaction volume, entity count, whether VAT filing is included, whether year-end statutory accounts are included, and whether anyone qualified reviews the work.

Be cautious of a fee far below market. Books are cheap to keep badly and expensive to fix — and the fixing usually lands in the same window as your audit deadline.

Where we fit

We are a mid-sized chartered practice. We provide bookkeeping, accounting and financial reporting, management reporting and virtual CFO work, alongside audit and tax — with independence properly separated where it applies.

We are the wrong choice if you want the cheapest possible monthly fee. We are a good fit if you want the books kept so that the audit and the tax return are straightforward rather than an annual emergency.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in an accounting firm in Dubai?

Whether they can handle your corporate tax position, whether the books will survive an audit, who reviews the work, and how they handle a backlog. Price alone tells you very little.

Can my accountant also audit my accounts?

Usually not the same accounts they prepared, because independence rules prevent it. Ask who does what at year end before you engage.

How much do accounting services cost in Dubai?

It depends on transaction volume, entity count and what is included — VAT filing and statutory accounts in particular. Compare scope, not headline fees.

Do I need a chartered accountant?

The title is not protected in the UAE. What is regulated is who may sign an audit and who may act as an FTA tax agent, both verifiable.

What is the most commonly missed item in UAE bookkeeping?

The end of service gratuity provision. It accrues monthly, and many SMEs never record it, which overstates net assets.

Should I use bookkeeping software instead?

Software records what you tell it. It will not decide whether a cost is disallowable, whether income is qualifying, or whether your VAT and corporate tax turnover reconcile.

What if my books are two years behind?

Common and fixable. It is a reconstruction rather than catch-up bookkeeping, and it should be scoped honestly — see our backlog recovery guide.
