You file a UAE corporate tax return through EmaraTax, within nine months of your tax period ending. The return takes your accounting profit, applies the adjustments that produce taxable income, records the elections you are making, and captures related party disclosures. The mechanical part is straightforward. What deserves attention is that some of the choices recorded in it are difficult or impossible to reverse afterwards.
Corporate tax filing: what to have finished before you open the return
Working in the wrong order is the main reason a return takes three times longer than it should. Do not begin data entry until you have:
- Closed and reconciled accounts for the period — every bank account agreed to statement, not to a spreadsheet.
- Financial statements under IFRS or IFRS for SMEs. If an audit is required, the numbers should be final even if the opinion is not yet signed.
- The tax computation — accounting profit, then each adjustment, each with a written basis.
- A related party schedule, covering domestic related parties as well as cross-border. Domestic related party transactions are fully in scope.
- A revenue reconciliation between the accounts and your VAT returns. Prepare it now, not when it is asked for.
- Confirmation of the tax period the portal has recorded — see first tax period.
Every one of these is something you would need anyway. Doing them first turns filing into transcription.
What the return actually asks for
| Part of the return | What sits behind it |
|---|---|
| Taxable person details | Licence, activities, period, contacts — must match the portal profile |
| Accounting basis and financial statements | The standards used, and the accounting profit the computation starts from |
| Elections and reliefs | Small Business Relief, free zone status, realisation basis, transitional rules, group elections |
| Income and expenditure adjustments | Non-deductible items, exempt income, interest limitation, entertainment restriction |
| Related party and connected person disclosures | The related party disclosure form, where thresholds are met |
| Losses | Brought forward, utilised, and carried forward — see loss carry-forward |
| Tax liability and credits | The computed liability, foreign tax credits, and any withholding credit |
| Declaration | Signed by the authorised signatory. This is the point at which it becomes yours |
The elections — and which ones you cannot take back
This is the part that justifies slowing down. Several decisions are made in the return itself, and some of them bind you beyond the period you are filing.
Small Business Relief. An election, not a status. Elect and you are treated as having no taxable income — but you also forgo using that period’s losses and certain other provisions. For a business with real losses to carry forward, electing can be the worse outcome. Model both before choosing, and note the relief is time-limited.
The realisation basis. An election about how unrealised gains and losses are treated. It affects every future period, not just this one, and it is the sort of choice that is easy to make casually and expensive to unpick.
Transitional rules on opening balances. Relief relating to assets held before the first tax period is claimed in the first return. Miss it there and the opportunity generally does not come back.
Qualifying Free Zone Person status. Claimed in the return, and it can be lost. Failing the conditions does not simply cost you the year — it can remove the 0% rate for subsequent periods too.
Tax group elections. Forming or joining a group changes who files, what is consolidated, and how losses move.
If you are unsure about an election, that uncertainty is the answer: get advice before submitting, not after. Correcting a computational error through voluntary disclosure is routine. Reversing an election often is not.
The order to work in
- Confirm the period in EmaraTax matches your financial year.
- Fix the accounting profit. Everything downstream moves if this moves, so do not start adjustments against a draft that is still changing.
- Work the adjustments in a standing schedule, one line per adjustment, each with the reason recorded. Build it so next year is a repeat rather than a rebuild.
- Decide the elections with the numbers in front of you, and document why.
- Complete the related party review and the disclosure form. Do not leave transfer pricing to the last day; if a benchmarking study is needed, it takes longer than the rest of the return combined.
- Reconcile to VAT and put the reconciliation in the file.
- Review, then submit, then pay — leaving enough days for the payment to clear.
A pre-submission review that takes twenty minutes
- Does the accounting profit in the return equal the accounting profit in the financial statements? Exactly?
- Does revenue reconcile to the total declared across the period’s VAT returns, with any difference explained in writing? An unexplained turnover mismatch is one of the clearest triggers for a query.
- Does every adjustment have a stated basis, not just a number?
- Have all related parties been captured, including domestic ones and connected persons?
- Do brought-forward losses agree to last year’s return?
- Is the period on the return the period the portal shows?
- Is the person signing actually the authorised signatory on the profile?
Our guide to the errors we see most in first returns covers what tends to survive a rushed review.
After submission
Pay, and then confirm in EmaraTax that the balance has cleared — your bank confirmation is not evidence the Authority received anything.
Then archive properly. Not just the return, but the computation, the basis for each adjustment, the election workings, the reconciliations and the related party schedule. In a query, the document that helps you is the contemporaneous one; a reconstruction two years later carries far less weight. See record retention requirements and why audited accounts are your best defence.
If you later find the return was wrong, correct it deliberately through voluntary disclosure rather than waiting to see whether it is noticed. Coming forward first is materially better than being found.
Frequently asked questions
Through EmaraTax, within nine months of your tax period ending. The return takes your accounting profit, applies the adjustments producing taxable income, records your elections and captures related party disclosures. The tax is due on the same date the return is.
Closed and reconciled accounts, financial statements under IFRS or IFRS for SMEs, a tax computation with a written basis for each adjustment, a related party schedule, a reconciliation between accounting revenue and your VAT returns, and confirmation that the portal shows the right tax period.
Several bind beyond the period being filed — the realisation basis election, transitional relief on opening balances claimed in the first return, and tax group elections. Small Business Relief also has consequences for losses in the period elected. Take advice before submitting rather than after.
Yes. The relief is an election made in a return, so the return is how you claim it. A business that simply does not file has not claimed the relief; it has missed a filing.
The return does not formally wait for the opinion, but the figures should be final. Filing on draft numbers the audit later adjusts leaves a return and a set of accounts that disagree. Free zone companies claiming the 0% qualifying rate need audited statements as a condition of that status.
Correct it through voluntary disclosure. Doing so before the FTA raises a query is materially better than the alternative. Computational errors are routine to correct; reversing an election often is not.
Yes. Domestic related party transactions are fully within the transfer pricing rules, not only cross-border ones. Complete the related party disclosure form where the thresholds are met.
Only a registered tax agent formally linked to your account can act for you with the FTA. An accountant filing under your own login is not your agent in the Authority’s eyes — the declaration and the liability remain yours.

A senior consultant will check the computation, the elections and the reconciliations — before the declaration makes them yours.
