How to choose an audit firm in Dubai and the UAE

Not another self-ranked list of the top 10 audit firms in Dubai. The four tiers of the market, the seven questions that separate firms, and where we honestly fit.

Seven selection criteriaWarning signsWhere we do not fit

Search for audit firms in Dubai — or auditing companies in Dubai, or the best audit firms in the UAE; the phrasing changes, the question does not — and you will find dozens of “top 10” lists, most written by firms who placed themselves at number one. This is not one of those. It sets out the criteria that actually decide whether an audit firm is right for you, so you can rank the shortlist yourself — including us.

The four tiers of the Dubai audit market

TierTypically suitsThe trade-off
Big FourListed groups, regulated entities, large multinationalsUnmatched depth and brand. An SME is a small account, priced accordingly and staffed junior
International networks (mid-tier)Groups with cross-border reportingNetwork reach with more partner access than the Big Four, at a real premium over local firms
Established local practicesSMEs and free zone companies with real complexityPartner involvement and zone knowledge. Depth varies enormously — this is the tier where diligence matters most
Small and low-cost firmsDormant or very simple entitiesCheapest signature. Some are excellent; some will sign whatever is put in front of them, which is a risk you carry, not them

Most UAE businesses reading this belong in tier three. The Big Four are not competing for a AED 8,000 free zone audit, and the cheapest signature is a false economy the first time a zone rejects it.

The seven questions that actually separate audit firms in Dubai

1. Is the firm registered with the Ministry of Economy?

Non-negotiable. A firm not registered to practise cannot validly sign an audit opinion in the UAE. Ask for the registration and check it.

2. Is it on your free zone’s approved list?

The most common expensive mistake. An audit signed by a firm not on your zone’s panel is rejected, and you commission a second audit under deadline pressure at a second fee. Verify against the zone’s own published list, not the firm’s website — see how approved auditor lists work.

3. Will a partner actually read your file?

Ask directly: who signs, and who does the fieldwork? A file prepared entirely by junior staff and signed on review is a different product from one a partner has engaged with — and both cost real money.

4. Does the fee quote hold?

Ask what happens if your records need work. A firm that quotes low and bills the reconstruction separately is not cheaper — see what actually drives audit cost. Get the scope and the exclusions in writing.

5. Do they understand your zone’s deadline?

Not the generic one — yours. Deadlines run from your own year end, and a firm that cannot tell you your date without looking it up will not be diarising it either. The deadline table shows how much they vary.

6. Can they handle the tax side?

Since corporate tax, your audited accounts are the foundation of your return. A firm that audits without understanding qualifying income or transfer pricing leaves you to bridge that gap yourself.

7. Will they tell you something you do not want to hear?

The hardest to assess before engaging, and the most valuable. An audit that never raises anything uncomfortable is not testing anything.

Warning signs

  • A quote given without seeing your trial balance
  • Reluctance to name the signing partner
  • “Approved by all free zones” — no firm is on every panel
  • A fee far below the market for your size and complexity
  • Any suggestion the opinion is a formality
  • No management letter — a clean audit with no observations at all, year after year

Where AONE BIZ fits, stated plainly

We are a mid-sized chartered practice in tier three. We are registered with the Ministry of Economy, we audit across the major UAE free zones, we have a genuine office in Dubai and one in Sharjah, and we do not have an Abu Dhabi office — we serve Abu Dhabi clients from Dubai and say so on that page.

We are a poor fit if you are a listed group needing a Big Four name, or if you want the cheapest possible signature. We are a good fit if you want a partner involved, the tax consequences understood alongside the audit, and a firm that will tell you when your books are the problem.

That is a claim, not a ranking. Test it against the seven questions above, and ask the same of everyone else on your shortlist.

The firms you will be comparing us with

Most people reading this are looking at three or four firms at once, so it is more useful to name them than to pretend the shortlist does not exist. What follows is publicly available information only. We have not reviewed their files, we are not in a position to judge their work, and nothing below should be read as criticism.

What actually separates them, and us

Every firm on that list will tell you they are experienced and client-focused. Those claims are unfalsifiable, so ignore them and ask four questions that have factual answers.

  1. Is the audit signed in-house? Several firms in this market subcontract the audit opinion to an associate and present the engagement as their own. Ask who signs, and ask for that person’s Ministry of Economy licence number. Ours is signed in-house.
  2. Who prepared the books? If the same firm keeps your records and audits them, that is a self-review threat. Ask how the independence line is drawn, and get the answer in writing.
  3. What do they decline? A firm that does audit, tax, setup, visas, PRO, IT and software implementation is telling you something about focus. We say no to visa processing, software resale and IT work — which is why our PRO services page is written as advisory rather than as a service line.
  4. Are they on your zone’s approved list? A federal licence and a zone listing are different things. Check both.

On size, be honest with yourself about what you need. A 250-person firm with eight offices brings capacity and a deeper bench. A smaller practice brings the person who signs your report actually being the person you speak to. Neither is better in the abstract; they are better for different companies, and a firm that tells you otherwise is selling rather than advising.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the top audit firms in Dubai?

It depends on your size and needs. The Big Four lead for listed and regulated entities; international mid-tier networks suit cross-border groups; established local practices suit most SMEs and free zone companies. A single ranking across all of them is not meaningful.

How do I check if an audit firm is approved?

Confirm Ministry of Economy registration, then check your specific free zone’s own published approved auditor list. Do not rely on the firm’s website.

How much should an audit cost in Dubai?

It varies with the state of your records more than with your size. Ask what happens to the fee if reconciliation work is needed, and get it in writing.

Should I use a Big Four firm?

If you are a listed group, a regulated entity or need that brand for investors, yes. For most SMEs and free zone companies the account will be small, the staffing junior and the fee high relative to the value.

Is the cheapest audit firm a bad idea?

Not always, but a fee far below market usually means minimal testing. If your zone rejects the report or the FTA questions the accounts, the cost lands on you.

Can one firm do my audit and my tax?

Yes, and there are real advantages since the accounts feed the tax return. Independence rules limit combining audit with certain other services, so ask how the firm separates them.

How do I change auditor?

There is a defined process, and timing matters relative to your deadline — see changing your auditor.

Quick answers

What matters most when choosing an audit firm?

The licence, approval by your free zone, sector experience, a clear timeline and fee, and direct access to the partner who signs.

Should I choose the cheapest audit quote?

Not on price alone. A low quote that excludes queries or adjustments can cost more in delays and rework. Compare what each quote includes.

Can I change auditors each year?

Yes, by shareholder resolution, though continuity saves time. Inform your free zone if it tracks the appointed auditor.
